Story County Youth Philanthropists-SCYP
Growing lifelong philanthropists who give of
their time, talent, and treasure for the
common good.
The Story County Community Foundation is pleased to
announce that we have established a Youth Philanthropy
Council. We are looking forward to partnering with the Story
County Volunteer Center to sponsor this organization for the
benefit of the Story County Community.
This exciting project is designed to involve youth in meaningful
ways in the philanthropic tradition, to encourage them to give
and serve in their community, and to make philanthropy a
“habit of the heart” for future generations. It is a joint effort
between the Story County Community Foundation and the
Volunteer Center of Story County.
SCYP will give young people an opportunity to help solve the
problems and challenges they all share. By involving teens in
grantmaking, SCYP will help today's high school students
become tomorrow's civic leaders.
Program goals are to:
1. help young people understand and experience philanthropy
2. acquire skills in organizing, facilitating and developing
criteria for a program that meets their needs
3. encourage and support meaningful youth-initiative service to
the community
4. involve youth and adults in partnership in community
philanthropy
5. educate youth and adult leaders in the process and value of
giving and serving
6. help young people develop the leadership skills necessary to
evaluate projects worthy of investment
To establish the youth council, students from Ames (and in the
other high schools in the county in the future) will fill out the
application, be interviewed and selected to serve on the
council. Adult leaders have been recruited to serve as council
members and mentors for the youth. The council will consist of
15-20 students.
Our plan, which is open to change by the council as it develops,
is to hold an orientation session in August and monthly meetings
during the school year.
The Story County Community Foundation will set aside $5,000 in
grant money for SCYP to award following a process of writing
grant guidelines and applications, accepting applications and
scoring them, making site visits and follow up on the awards
granted.
We feel this is an excellent way to develop philanthropists for
the future.
