Suzan Shierholz, board president and volunteer CEO
Suzan and her husband, John, live in rural Ames.They have three grown daughters and are very
much enjoying four grandchildren.
Suzan has been a community volunteer and philanthropist ever since moving to Ames in 1976. Her
first years were spent volunteering in the schools in many capacities from PTA president to
helping found the Ames High Athletic Booster Club. She has chaired the board of directors of
many of our human service agencies, including the Lincolnway Chapter of the American Red
Cross, ACCESS, the Octagon, YSS, United Way of Story County, Center for Childcare
Resources, Mary Greeley Medical Center Auxiliary and the ASSET Board, and the Ames Noon
Kiwanis board of directors to name a few. She is a graduate of Leadership Ames. Suzy has
delivered Meals on Wheels every month since moving to Ames. She was the State of Iowa Special
Olympics Tennis Commissioner for fifteen years and recently served as the Tennis Commissioner
for the National Special Olympics held in Ames. She is currenely serving on the Story County
Dental Clinic Advisory Board and YSS Corportation Board and is Co-Chair of the Friends
Committee.
Suzan was honored as Iowan of the Day by the Blue Ribbon Foundation of the Iowa State Fair in
2009 and was recently awarded the Nonprofit Board/Staff Leadership Award at the Iowa Nonprofit
Summit.
Laura West, board vice-president
Laura West is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and licensed as a certified public
accountant with the state of Iowa. Laura is a partner with West Financial Advisors, LLC
specializing in personal financial planning, investment management services, and small business
retirement plans.
Laura currently serves in volunteer leadership roles with United Way of Story County, Nevada
Economic Development Council, Nevada Community Resource Center, and Nevada Rotary. In the
past, she has served as a volunteer for Story County Alliance for Philanthropy, Krys Foundation,
One Heart Equestrian, and Nevada Youth Soccer Club.
Laura lives in Nevada with her husband, Brian, and their three children Ally, Jack and Mike.
Kristin Pates-executive member at large
Kristin and her husband, Bryan, reside in Ames.
Kristin is the Campaign Director of United Way of Story County. Her work at UWSC heightens her
awareness of the many needs facing individuals and families living in Story County.
Krisitn is a graduate of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa where she was an active member of the
student body while earning a degree in Communication Arts with an emphasis in public relations.
Her previous responsibilities at an area non-profit organization included various aspects of
fundraising, volunteer engagement and communications.
Jim Black
After earning a BS and an MS degree in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State in 1970 and 1971,
Jim and his wife, Mary Ann were happy to return to Ames in 1987. They have one grown son, Bob,
who is married and lives in Atlanta. After 25 years in engineering and operations management for
manufacturing companies, Jim was a Project Manager for CIRAS at Iowa State University for 15
years. He retired from ISU and is now a private manufacturing and business consultant.
Jim is treasurer, finance chair, and strategic planning co-chair for Youth & Shelter Services Board
of Directors and was appointed to YSS Foundation Board of Governors this year. He serves on the
Executive Board of Mid-Iowa Council-Boy Scouts of America and Ames Foundation Board. Jim is
past president of Mainstream Living and Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa Boards, past district
commissioner for Broken Arrow District - Boy Scouts of America, and past president of the Pi
Kappa Alpha Fraternity House Corporation Board.
Don Erickson
Don lives in Ames with his wife, Becky. They have two grown daughters, Amber and Casee.
Don is a Chartered Financial consultant, president of Resource Planning Group, which is a fee
based financial planning firm.
Don is currently the chair of the Ames Foundation Endowment Committee, and president of the
Town and Country Kiwanis Foundation
Charles Glatz
Chuck is a long time resident of Ames. He and his wife, Bonnie (deceased) have three grown
children. Chuck is engaged to Kathy White!
Chuck has been on the faculty at ISU in the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Department
since 1975. He served 8 years as Deptartment Chair, 6 months as Interim Dean of Engineering
and currently as a University Professor.
Chuck has served or is serving on numerous community boards including UCC Childcare, St.
Cecilia's Board of Education. He served many years as a youth soccer coach for Ames, Parks
and Recreation; Catechist and Youth Liturgy volunteer at St. Cecilia's,;Food at First volunteer;
Story County Dental Clinic Advisory Board and Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas Aquinas
Dale Henricks
Dale and his wife, Lynn, live in Story City. They have two grown daughters.
Dale is a long time educator and administrator in our schools. He was Roland-Story High School's
principal and then superintendent of schools. Dale served as co-coordinator of the America
Reads/America Counts Program and currently supervises Field Experiences for the College of
Education at ISU.
Dale has served on many committees and the Board of Directors of the United Way of Story
County, Chaired the ASSET Board, served on the Roland Story School Foundation Board of
Directors, serves on the board of the Greater Chamber Connection/Main Street Connection in
Story City and volunteers with Special Olympics.
Vern Hawkins
Vern and his wife, DeLores, live in Ames. They have one grown son, Curtis, who also resides in
Ames.
Vern is the assistant director of Admissions at Iowa State University. He has also served as an
admissions counselor and as a special assistant to the vice president for Student Affairs.
Vern has served on the Ames Human Relations Committee, the Ames Ecumenical Housing
Board, ISU Affirmative Action Committee, ISU American Indian Symposium Committee, ISU
All-University Judiciary Committee, Ames/ISU YMCA Board of Directors, ISU Student Affairs
Diversity and Equity Committee, ISU Boxing Club advisor and the United Way of Story County
division leader for ISU Enrollment Services. He has also served as a volunteer for Special Oympics
for 20 years.
Judy Jones
Judy Jones and her husband have lived in Ames over 36 years. They have two grown children.
Judy recently retired from the State Library of Iowa located in Des Moines. As a library consultant,
she worked with public, school and academic library staff. She coordinated the federal library grant
program, the statewide research database, technology issues and library grants. She developed
online resources to assist library staff in locating funding sources and built expertise in grant
writing. Judy has been active as a volunteer in the Ames school system, recently with RSVP
activities, the clothing room at her church, and the literacy program at the Ames Public Library.
Judy is also a board member of the Center for Creative Justice and is active in procuring grant
funds for that agency.
Phyllis Lepke
Phyllis has lived in rural Story County for nearly 30 years with husband Larry, a Roland business
owner. They have a grown son, Matthew.
Phyllis, who is now retired, was an ISU faculty member, alumni administrator and foundation
fundraiser and executive.
Her volunteer leadership service includes United Way of Story County, American Red Cross
Lincolnway Chapter, Ames Community Arts Council, Dance Co’Motion, Nonprofit Management
Academy, Story County Alliance for Philanthropy, and many Iowa State committees including
childcare, performing arts and governance. She participated on the Vision for Ames committee and
served as citizen member of The Tribune editorial board. Phyllis is a graduate of Leadership Ames.
Barbara McBreen
Barbara has lived in Story County for 23 years and in Cambridge for the past twelve years. She
has worked in the communications field for more than 30 years. Her journalism experience
includes radio, television, newspapers and magazine writing. She worked for the Ames Tribune for
three years covering Story County. This gives her a good perspective on county issues. She
currently works as a communications specialist in the communications office for the Iowa State
University College of Agricultue and Life Sciences.
Barbara Parker
Barb and her husband Rich live in Nevada. They have three sons.
Barb has been a speech pathologist for 33 years. The past 30 with Heartland AEA working
primarily in the Nevada Community School District but also in Colo/Nesco and Collins/Maxwell
districts. Barb "retired" 2 years ago and has been doning some sub work and also a project for the
Nevada Community Schools.
Matthew Petersen
Matt and this wife, Holly, live in Huxley. Their two children attend school in the Ballard School
District.
Matt is employed by Mary Greeley Medical Center as the supervisor of outpatient services for the
Mary Greeley Rehabilitation and Wellness department. He received his undergraduate degree from
Wartburg College in Biology, a master's degree in Physical Therapy from Des Moines University,
and a Master's in Public Administration for Drake University.
Matt is a board member for the Huxley Little League program and is active in the Ballard Booster
Club. He became interested in the Story County Community Foundation when he began learning
about some of the excellent projects that were taking place because of grants received from the
foundation.
