RE: Story County Community Foundation receives grant
Ames, IA --The Story County Community Foundation president, Suzan Shierholz,
and development director, John Harris, recentely participated in CONNECT:
Community Foundation '10 Networking Summit. CONNECT provided community
foundations from across the state a unique opportunity to learn from each other
and develop plans to implement ideas locally. The Iowa Council of Foundations
offered the opportunity for attendees to apply for an Idea Implementation Support
Grant.
The Story County Community Foundation applied for and received a $1000 grant
made possible by the Iowa Council of Foundations to help develop materials for
professional advisors in Story County and the coordinating materials for potential
donors to the foundation. These materials will be shared with the other
community foundations across the state.
Changes to Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program Create Greater
Opportunities for Local Residents to Improve Lives in Story County
Through Story County Community Foundation
Ames, IA Jan 7, 2010 – As communities across the state recover and rebuild from
recent economic challenges, the Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program is expanding
the impact people in Story County can have in improving their local communities
through charitable giving. Under modifications to the program, which went into
effect January 1, 2010, those who give to the Story County Community Foundation,
will be eligible to receive 25% tax credits for their gifts, up from the 20% credits
previously offered. Approximately $3.7 million in tax credits, an increase from the
previous $3 million, will be available annually. Through donations utilizing Endow
Iowa, the Story County Community Foundation will be able to continue making a
difference here in Story County now and in the future.
“There has never been a better or more vital time for an opportunity like this,”
said Suzan Shierholz, president Story County Community Foundation. “We know
that in tough economic times, it becomes more difficult for people to give to
charitable causes. At the same time, the need for charitable giving is growing.
With Endow Iowa, generous Iowans are rewarded for giving, while communities
are able to continue the good work of making life better for residents.”
The Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program was established in 2003 to encourage
individuals, businesses and organizations to make lasting investments in their
communities. Those who give will be able to take advantage of the increased
Endow Iowa tax credits in conjunction with federal tax benefits for charitable gifts.
“With this tax credit program, Iowa is at the forefront in creating solutions that
make charitable giving easier, more rewarding and more effective,” said Angela
Dethlefs-Trettin, director of Iowa Council of Foundations. “We’re excited by how
donors are responding to the program. It provides a powerful tool for people
across the state to strengthen their local communities and also benefit from the
tax incentives. They’re able to see how their philanthropic gifts are making a
difference right where they live.”
The Story County Community Foundation provides local residents a simple,
powerful and highly personal approach to giving—so that their gifts do good
works within the community, forever. For more information on how Endow Iowa is

IRA Charitable Rollover for 2010
through 2011
As part of the Tax Relief, Unemployment
Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation
Act of 2010, Congress passed a two-year
extension of Charitable IRA legislation
allowing
Americans age 70½ and older to make IRA
contributions to public charities in 2010 and
2011 without paying income tax on that
money. Because this legislation comes so
close to the end of 2010, qualified charitable
contributions made from IRAs through January
31, 2011 can be applied for 2010 tax
purposes. This is good news for people who
wish to make a major gift during their
lifetimes. It's also good news for the
community foundations that are prepared to
help them put these gifts to work in their
communities. In addition, donors who choose
to give through their community foundation
may be eligible for the Endow Iowa Tax Credit
